Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows many rows of A frame tents surrounded by a fence of pine boughs with an arched entrance. The trees in the foreground have been cut down. Numeric notations on verso: "131" and "XI." Inscription on verso: "Ordway Gardner Coll." Numeric notations scratched into negative "99 131."
