Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a short line of wagons. A few tents stand next to two buildings on slightly elevated ground. A man stands midground in the center of the image and several buildings are visible in the distance behind him. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "392" and "XIV."
