Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows one large cannon, a stock of cannonballs and fortifications. There is a river in the background, and one can see the legs of a man sitting on the right edge of the photo. Numeric notation on verso: "743/10." Inscription on verso: "Port Hudson" and "Collection of Americana Frederick H. Meserve 265 Edgecombe Avenue New York City."
