Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

O-89. In 1909, Victor D. Brenner used this portrait and O-88 as models for the Lincoln-head penny (Ostendorf, 174). Graphite inscription on verso"O-89C." Ink inscription on verso "Lincoln, Abraham." Photographers imprint on verso: "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony 501 Broadway New York, from Photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery."
