Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

As lieutenant general, standing facing forward with mourning armband (for President Lincoln) on his left arm. Same image as GLC 1320. Imprint on recto "F. Gutekunst, Photog'r." Graphite inscription on verso "U. S. Grant - Lt. General U.S.A. Fair for Sol. & Sailors Home Oct. 30th 1865." Photographers imprint on verso: "F. Gutekunst 704 & 706 Arch, Philadelphia."
