Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Photographers imprint on verso: "Brady's Album Gallery. No. 384. White House, Formerly residence of Mrs. Custis Washington, now the residence of Col. Lee. 17th May, 1862. The Photographs of this series were taken directly from nature, at considerable cost. Warning is therefore given that legal proceedings will be at once instituted against any party infringing the copyright."
