Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image shows a group of six artillery officers posed on the front porch of General Stevens' house in Beaufort, South Carolina. In front of the porch stand two African-American workers, one is holding the reins of a horse, which is in the center of the photo. Imprint on recto "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by M. B. Brady, in the Clerk's Offic of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Graphite inscription on verso "Genl. Stevens house, at Beaufort."
