Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as member of the New York Committee of Safety, asking members of Congress to arrive punctually on the day the Session adjourns. Launches into a discourse on what it means to have a senate and to be a senator.

Beginning in 1775, Yates was elected to represent Albany in each of the four New York provincial congresses. Commuting between Albany and New York City, Yates attended the congress as it fled before the British in 1776, served as its temporary president, and chaired the committee that produced the first New York state constitution.
