Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"No 6." Written from camp near Franklin. Discusses debts owed by him and money owed to him. Complains that his father worries about the money he owes to his brothers but not the money they owe to him. Someone stole his good winter blanket and left a ratty one in its place. Lists the winter gear that he will send home.
