Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"No 13." Written from camp near Franklin. He bought a gold chain for her locket. Relates that Chris Brown from Company I was being careless with his rifle and accidentally shot Wilson McCandles in the rump. The bullet passed straight through both cheeks, but McCandles should be all right. Written in pencil.
