At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed by Cummings, Hilliard and Company. First edition. Original worn paperboards and quarter leather. Written by Shaler as American Consul General at Algiers. Includes chapter 7 "Extracts of the journal kept in the consulate of the United States, at Algiers," which appears to be the only original materials. (The rest appears to derive from other works, as per Shaler's preface.)
