Writes to his wife about the movements of his division and the numbers of the present force. Expects to be reunited with his wife and boys once the campaign is over and his appointment is terminated.
Eliza Griffin Johnston, the second wife of General Johnston, was an artist and diarist. After Johnston was killed at Shiloh in April 1862, Eliza raised their remaining five children on her own. In 1894 she donated relics of her husband and family to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. The donation included a book, compiled for her husband, of watercolors of Texas wildflowers she had painted in the 1840s and 1850s. "Texas Wild Flowers," a book of 101 of her paintings, was published in 1972.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
