Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recommends to Secretary of the Treasury Fessenden that Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jr., be appointed agent for purchase and sale of cotton and other commodities from the Confederate states. With a supporting autograph note signed and dated 7 December 1864 by James Dixon on page two. Written on "Office of the Tribune" stationery.
