Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Halleck writes as Union Major General Commanding to Brigadier General Patrick. "The Secty of War wishes proof of the fact ... that Libby Prison was mined at about the time of [General Hugh J.] Kilpatrick's raid for the purpose of blowing up our prisoners." 1 full length seated black and white engraving of Halleck included.
