At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mason offers condolence upon the death of Brock's mother. He offers a quote from a magazine article that he read when his own mother died in 1951 that he hopes will be comforting. The passage describes death as nothing because loved ones are waiting and continuity of relationships persists.
