At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written while serving a diplomat in post- World War II Tokyo. He writes a quotation expressing that human brotherhood, sacrifice, and genuine international cooperation are the only bases for an enduring human society. Regardless of man's actions, however, the building of the Kingdom of God is moving toward its conclusion.
