Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Deputy Secretary of the province Goldsbrow Banyar and witnessed by his clerk, John Godby. Includes official seal.

De Lancey was Lieutenant Governor and Commander-in-Chief of New York from 1753 through 1760. Banyar, a career British colonial official, achieved wealth and prominence in colonial New York as Deputy Auditor-General of the province and then Deputy Secretary of the province. He was also Deputy Clerk of the Council and the provincial Supreme Court.
