Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Transmits the deposition (not included) of Henry Thompson given to H. Griffiths, Esquire, United States Commercial Agent on the Island of Mauritius. Thompson had been a crew member of the Bark Pembroke, from which he was illegally discharged.

Forsyth was Secretary of State 1834-1841. Holabird was District Attorney for the State of Connecticut during the Amistad trial.
