Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bostwick, a lawyer, discusses terms of settlement in a court case between Mr. Jervett and his creditors. Holabird represented the creditors. Bostwick states that Jervett will settle on the terms proposed by Holabird in previous correspondence. Address indicates that Holabird practiced in Winchester, Connecticut.

Bostwick served as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1840. Holabird was District Attorney for the State of Connecticut during the Amistad trial.
