Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the case of Peters vs. Sumner, implying that Griswold and Holabird were working on the case together. States that E. Phelps, another lawyer, moved the date of the case on account of a witness or witnesses who were absent. Relates that he will attend to Hitchcock's cases.

Griswold served as Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut in 1835. Holabird was District Attorney for the State of Connecticut during the Amistad trial.
