Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Records a land sale made by the chiefs of several Illinois tribes to several individuals listed. Lists the goods the Indians received and the boundaries of the land. Signed by the commander of Illinois country, Hugh Lord, other grantees, and chiefs of Kaskaskias, Pewariah and Cahogias tribes. Notarized by James Biddle.
