Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Full length portrait wearing Colonel's uniform (3 stars) and hat. Wears a full beard. Signed on recto "Jno S. Mosby." Faded sepia tone. With catalog description item numbered 134 glued on verso. Like most reproductions of this image, Wirt's Mosby's Rangers shows the heap of clothing on the floor upon the left side, rather than the right.
