Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

(pp. 2 and 5 written vertically on inner leaves; takes 3 months to get letters). re: Loved the pictures that Clara sent him. Looks at the pictures about 20 times a day. Remembers the good old times. Writes with much affection towards Clara. Tries to fix a dilemma between his mother and Clara.
