At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

President Lincoln sends a colored man to advise the Secretary of War, Stanton, on the organization of colored troops in the army. Instructs Stanton to "see [L.H.?] Putnam, whom you will find a very intelligent colored man, and who wishes to talk about our colored forces, their organization ... " Written on a small card.

Hon. Sec. of War, please see L. H. Putnam, whom you will find is a very intelligent colored man and who wishes to talk about our colored [2] forces, their organization &c.
