Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lt. Simpson's navigational logbook aboard the U.S.F.S. Richmond in the South Pacific Ocean. Pages 156 - 180 are a series of question and answer exercises on the theory and practice of navigation. Page 181 contains a series of translation exercises from English into both Spanish and French.
