At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters to the editor address situations at the writers' locations, including Jackson Hospital in Richmond and Sullivan's Island, amongst other places. An article describes the "Patriotism of Southern Women" and their efforts to support the war cause. A brief editorial titled "Lincoln's Proclamation" comments on it as an attempt to demoralize the Confederacy. Also printed are brief comments on various religious topics, including "The Cost of Blessings," "New England Puritans," "Christmas," "Courage," "Happiness," "Tolerance," and "A Just Vindication." "Trials -- A Test of Faith" asks readers to maintain their faith after the reverse of Chattanooga. "Notes on the Times" contains a dispatch from Major-General Sam Jones regarding the movement of the Confederate forces. Also mentioned in this section are a raid made by Captain Peter M. Everett into Kentucky and an attack on Fort Pillow.

The purpose of this journal, according to its first issue, is the advancement of the Baptist denomination in both intelligence and piety, while giving support to the Confederacy. Thousands of copies were distributed to soldiers.
