Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reactions to Lincoln's emancipation proclamation. Article on the controversy over the new militia: "Now that New Orleans is captured the new militia law is suicidal." Includes General Sibley's expedition to New Mexico. Captured by David Cates Co. B 22nd Conn. Regt. The names of Cates family members are written in a childish hand at the top of both pages. Wallpaper has pale blue colored grape and leaf pattern.
