Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed by Union forces the day they captured the city during Banks's Red River Expedition. Order by Gen. Banks congratulating his troops for their victories. Circular "To Capitalists" discusses investment opportunities with 14 rules for employment of free Negroes. Ink note: "This paper was printed by the soldiers of the175th NY Vols. on the morning after the capture of Franklin, La by Union forces under Maj. Gen Banks." Inscription of Thos. Beckett, M.D. Surgeon, 175th NY. Wallpaper has three romantic Mediterranean peasant scenes printed on tan paper (pattern # 1958).
