Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Clay to review a copy of a letter to Secretary of War Joel Roberts Poinsett (not included). Discusses attempts by politicians to lend him support for a presidential bid in the election of 1840, to which he expressed indifference. Comments on various aspects of selecting a candidate to run against Martin Van Buren. Notes that he hopes to see Clay in a few weeks, the "frontiers if Canada remaining quiet."
