Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This is a reprint by the New York Anti-Slavery Depository. A note inside the cover explains that there were no copies of this Congressional document available in Washington. Contains statements and correspondence from John Forsyth (Secretary of State 1834-1841), William S. Holabird (District Attorney for the State of Connecticut during the Amistad case), A. Calderon de la Barca (envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of Spain) and various others involved in the Amistad case.
