Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Responding to Hilldring's letter and informing Hilldring that he does not have to make reservations for the dinner since he and his wife are the guests of honor. Gans says he can arrange for Mrs. Hilldring to sit at the floor table with Mrs. Gans and thanks Hilldring for his cooperation.
