At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains ten printed pages outlining duties of Christian Commission delegates, listing local Commission agencies, and listing members and executive committee members of the Commission. Includes 70 handwritten pages of Herring's journal. Pages 71-110 of the journal are blank, and pages 111 and 112 include various autographs. Among other undertakings, Herring describes leading soldiers into baptismal water, attending a funeral, participating in various meetings, and interacting with various Christian converts.
