Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes battle between the American frigate President and the larger British frigate Little Belt. Notes that "The British frigates on this coast are behaving shamefully, as they come to press men out[.]" Also discusses his business travel and giving a letter of introduction to another businessman named Mr. Croskry. Addressed to Hadden in London.
