At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Congressman Wilson reports that "we are now entering upon the third week's debate on the subject of Genl [Andrew] Jackson's conduct in the Seminole War." Explains that the argument, which focused on the legality/constitutionality of Jackson's sacking of Pensacola, divided along party lines. Specifically discusses Henry Clay's involvement in the debate. Encloses a copy of Clay's speech (not included).

John Wilson was a Massachusetts congressman, elected as a federalist to the Thirteenth Congress (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1815) and the Fifteenth Congress (March 4, 1817-March 3, 1819).
