Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes about the proposed reorganization of his son's (Lieutenant Ward Marston) corps in the Marines. He is worried this will adversely affect his son's rank and asks Hobart for advice. Mentions President John Adams, "I was last evening with the venerable Sage of Quincy; his health was only tolerably good, but his mind was brilliant. God grant he may live many years, and continue a blessing to our Country."
