Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Broadside states, "During the latter days of Mr. Webster, he was assailed by the Abolitionists on account of his 7th of March speech." Excerpts from the speech: "If the Fanatics and Abolitionists ever get the power in their hands they will override the Constitution... and finally Bankrupt the Country and Deluge it with blood."

Webster's famous "Seventh of March" speech was in favor of the Compromise of 1850.
