Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Former President Buchanan acknowledges receipt of her letter and thanks her for the photograph she sent of herself. Her friend, his niece, White House hostess Harriet Lane is upset by the death of her brother James Buchanan Lane. Buchanan was supporting Weaver's education, for he promises to pay promptly the next bill for it that he receives. Written from Wheatland, his home near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
