At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bryan writes, "I brought the subject of the decree in Washburn v. Washburn before the Court - The Ch: Just: [Chief Justice] says that the Jeffs[?] have a right to sell the Negroes under the decree in as much as they are to be delivered to them & they can do as they please with them." Written to Williamson in North Carolina.
