Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Otto as Acting Secretary of the Interior. Countersigned by David P. Holloway as Commissioner of Patents. Tees' written description of his improvement is signed by John Clouds and J. R. Deacon as witnesses. Includes a one-page diagram of Tees' invention, signed by Tees' lawyer Henry Howson, and by Charles E. Foster and Charles Howson as witnesses. Includes a seal and dark green ribbon.
