At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Replies to a previous inquiry from Haddock, his nephew, regarding the first settlers of New Hampshire. States that Nathaniel Adams' 1825 book, 'The Annals of Portsmouth', adds little to general knowledge on the history of New Hampshire. Offers his opinion on how religion and politics shaped the history of New England.

Charles Bricket Haddock, the son of Webster's sister Abigail, was a professor at Dartmouth from 1819-1854 and United States charge d'affaires in Portugal 1850-1854.
