At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Know all Men by these Presents, That We George Washington & Geo Wm. Fairfax are held and firmly bound unto Charles West of Loudoun County in the just and full Sum of Four hundred and five pounds Curry. Money of Virginia To be paid unto the said Charles West his certain Attorney, his Executors, Administrators, or Assigns: To which Payment well and truly to be made, We bind ourselves, jointly and severally, our joint and several Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, firmly, by these Presents. Sealed with our Seals, and dated this Twenty Eighth Day of October Anno Dom. One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy two
The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That if the above bound George Washington, his Heirs, Executors, or Administrators do, and shall well and truly pay, or cause to be paid, unto the said Charles West his certain Attorney, his Executors, Administrators, or Assigns, the just Sum of Two hundd. & two pounds Ten shillings Cy. as aforesd. on or before ye. 25th. day of Novr. 1774, it being ye. third paymt. to be made for a Tract of 484 Acs. of Ld. on ye head of Dogue Ck. sold by ye sd. West to ye sd. Washington. Then the above Obligation to be void, or else to remain in full Force and Virtue.
