Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

With Century Co. stamp, printed caption, and black ink inscription on verso. Enlarged version of GLC6999.25. Caption on verso reads "photographed in 1864. This Confederate prison was situated on Carey Street, and was originally a stron old brick warehouse, until it was converted into a prison. Rebel soldiers are in the foreground, and the Rebel flag floats on top. Startling stories are told of expereinces, suffering and starvation, endured by many Union soldiers once confined in this gloomy building during the war."
