Reports continued research and suggests other to contact regarding the letter from Robert E. Lee addressed to his son Boo (George Washington Custis Lee) at West Point (GLC07081.01). Andrews was possibly the George L. Andrews who taught French at West Point from 1871 to 1892. Coster is possibly the Lincoln collector of that name.

Dear Sir:
Your letter of March 26th was duly received. The Adjutant of the Academy who has charge of the records, letters, &c., has been ill for several days and confined to his quarters, so that I have been unable to see him. I finally went to the Superintendent. He said that there were no other [2] than official letters in the office, and that none of them could be taken away without the permission of the Secretary of War. When the Adjutant gets about again, I will make further inquiry.
I remember very well the letter from Gen. R.E. Lee to which you refer. I should be happy to aid you in making your collection if I could do so. It has been suggested to me that perhaps the relatives of the officers you mention may be disposed to favor you in the matter. Mrs. Custer [3] might be willing to give you letter of General Custer's, Geo. D. Bayard, I believe married a daughter of Col. Otis of the Army, the latter might have a letter to spare. James B. McPherson's mother was living at Clyde, Ohio as I am told, and I have not heard of her decease.
I am sorry that I cannot do something myself to meet your wishes in this matter.
