The title continues: "Compiled from Surveys and Information Under the Direction of Capt, W.E. Merrill U.S. Engrs. Chattanooga Nov 21st 1863." However, "Capt, W.E. Merrill U.S. Engrs" is crossed out and underneath is hand written: "Capt. Preston F. West. U.S.C.S." It is a Civil War lithograph printed on blue paper with coloring and manuscript additions, showing Chattanooga, railroads, surrounding mountains (including Missionary Ridge), roads, and rivers. The locations of various troop divisions (including those under J.E. Smith) and their routes are marked in red ink. Made just before the Battle of Chattanooga.
