At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Frank Mills, 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, 24th Infantry Regiment. Signed by E. D. [Diminick?], 1st Lieutenant of Company G, 9th Cavalry, as a witness. Includes the names and signatures (or mark) of soldiers in Company G. Muster roll for 30 June 1874-31 August 1874. A note written across the printed text of the roll indicates that Company G was paid 28 September 1874.

The legendary 9th and 10th Cavalries, known as Buffalo Soldiers, were raised in 1866. Following the Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers were primarily engaged in conflict against Native Americans on the Western Frontier.
