Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his father about his stalled plans to return home. Reports having received letters from his mother and Harold. Discusses the capture of his friend Hatfield, a descendant of the famous Hatfield-McCoys of Kentucky, who proved to his captors that being a good fighter runs in the family. Encloses a postal order and Harold's letter (not included). Written on Knights of Columbus letterhead.

Corporal Hopkins was in Company F, 305th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces. Harold Hopkins is his brother.
