Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his commanding officer that he has been in the hospital for five weeks and would like the opportunity to return to the states with his company. Written on Knights of Columbus letterhead.

Sergeant Ward fought with the American Expeditionary Forces in Company H, 309th Infantry, USA, and was treated at Base Hospital 41 at the time this letter was written. Captain Anderson was in Company H, 309th Infantry, USA and went on to become a colonel in the 324th Infantry during World War II.
