Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A communication from the Headquarters of the Massachusetts Delegation to the Republican Convention, Chicago (from the Secretary of that Delegation) thanking Governor Randall of Wisconsin "for the kind and liberal invitation to us to an execution over the North Western Railroad to Madison...and for his thoughtful care for our comfort and pleasure" during a recent trip to the city. Obviously a draft; heavily corrected throughout.
