More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Summary of Content: Written on War Department, Washington City stationery, President Lincoln requests Major Thomas T. Eckert supply specific reports regarding the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. In part: "Please furnish me copies of all dispatches sent by the Secretary of War or myself, on or about the negotiations..." Lincoln lists the specific dispatches he is requesting (including ones to General Grant, General Ord, and Mr. Seward) by date.
