Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on War Department, Washington City stationery, President Lincoln requests Major Thomas T. Eckert supply specific reports regarding the Hampton Roads Peace Conference. In part: "Please furnish me copies of all dispatches sent by the Secretary of War or myself, on or about the negotiations..." Lincoln lists the specific dispatches he is requesting (including ones to General Grant, General Ord, and Mr. Seward) by date.
