Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Rear Admiral Harry B. Neale gives in depth instructions to the ships under his command to form at distances of 120 fathoms from each other in order to attack Algiers. A Van (front), Center and Rear Division are established and orders are issued seperately to each Division and to the force as a whole.
